Futsal courts finally open in Whittier

Announcements about outdoor futsal fields in Minneapolis began popping up in late October. One at Whittier Park, another at Clinton Field Park. Even one at Audubon Park in Northeast. While an exciting landmark for the burgeoning futsal community, it was also a long time in the making.

In fact, my first story for Southwest Voices was the opening of futsal courts in Clinton Field Park. They were slated to open in 2023. Back in January 2022, I met Caleb Crossley, founder of Futsal Society, at the Whittier Spyhouse. He pointed out large portraits of a teenage futsal player on the coffee shop’s walls as he explained how accessible futsal was. I promised to come watch an indoor game.

Many delays and one futsal field removed from the plan later, the Futsal Society played pick-up games on the city’s first futsal court on Nov. 6 at Clinton Field Park.
