A constitutional amendment to increase school funding is on the ballot for the November election. This ballot measure was approved by the Minnesota Legislature
during its 2026 session with strong bipartisan support. When Minnesota became a state, land was set aside to create a permanent trust fund for public schools. Over time, the funds in the trust have grown as investment income has outpaced the limited distribution calculation allowed by the Minnesota constitution. This amendment would allow the distribution to be
recalculated to align with modern investment practices. The distributions would be designed to maintain the integrity of the trust over time while allowing current students to benefit from increased school funds. This is an opportunity to increase school funding without other
cuts or tax increases. A majority of Minnesota voters must vote "yes" for it to be adopted. Leaving the amendment question blank on
the ballot counts as a "No" vote.
CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT 1
Increasing funding to school districts Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to increase the funding going to all school districts from the permanent school fund, which is a fund that supports school districts without raising individual income or property taxes, effective July 1, 2027
